Tournament Clock One Second Before Break

Jeff Wicker (Philadelphia, PA) is the 1,800th entry in the event.

"I wanted to see a nice round number," says Wicker who's hoping this entry will be his lucky ticket.

Players are on a 15 minute break and surprisingly nobody has entered in the last 10 minutes.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): $500,000 Prize Pool, $110,000+ Up Top

Level 12 (Blinds 1k/2k/300 ante)
1C Entries: 903 (1,781 total)

It's been a feeding frenzy at Parx for the opening event of the Big Stax V as there's literally been
a player a minute entering for the last two hours.

"I wasn't going to do it," says Marguerite Spagnuolo (Staten Island, NY), "but Marder talked me into it."
That's Mike Marder (Sewell, NJ) who's already bagged 211k and explained the value of the enormous prize pool.

"He said it doesn't matter how many times you've bought in," says Marguerite who swore after four entries she wouldn't play again, "you just have to bag chips for tomorrow with 90 minute levels."

The big carrots are the $500,000 prize pool and first place totaling more than $110,000 (198 places paid).

And as the field is set to top 1,800 entries, Andrew, one of the hustling tournament officials, laughs, "anyone want to guess again," as the prediction for total entries continues to grow.  Players have up until 12 pm Sunday to register in the event.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Big Stax Big Stacks

Level 11 (Blinds 800/1,600/200 ante)
1C Entries: 873 (1,755 total)

Robert Santora

The chip leaders are now in the high 200s and 300k range.

Ray Ross (Maple Glen, PA) is the leader with 315k and says he's had big stacks in both earlier flights including 400k in Day 1B.

Another top five stack belongs to Robert Santora (Bensalem, PA) who is at 275k and has been chipping up all day.

Ray Wright 315k
Tony "G" 290k
Robert Santora 275k
Ian Johnson 225k
Shing Har 210k

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Big Hands Before Dinner

Level 10 (Blinds 600/1,200/200 ante)
1C Entries: 851 (1,733 total)

Gossweiler Gets River Help
Two hands before the dinner break worth noting included a bad beat and a three-way all in where pocket Aces hold for a huge pot.

Joe Gossweiler (Roseland, NJ) and his opponent are all in on a flop of J♠ 10♠ 7x:

Gossweiler: 9♠ 8♠ (straight, OE straight flush draw)
Opponent: Tx Tx (set of Tens)

Turn: Tx (opponent quad Tens)

River: 7♠

Gossweiler rivers a straight flush against Quad Tens to get a double-up for a 150k chip pot.  His opponent was left with 12k and Gossweiler eventually knocked him out.

Across the Clubhouse there's a three-way all in with Jonathan Paul (Easton, PA) holding pocket rockets.

Paul: AA
Player 2: QQ
Player 3: A9

The board runs out 9-5-4-3-A and Gossweiler's set of Aces wins a 245k pot as all three players had healthy stacks.

Marguerite Before.......

22 players have joined (or re-joined) the field since the start of dinner break.  One player who did not
is Marguerite Spagnuolo (Staten Island, NY) who has played and busted four times.

"No more," she says, "this is how I feel," as she puts a finger gun to her head.

And she's happy to share her before and after pictures.

Dinner Break (Next Blinds 600/1,200/200 ante)
Play Resumes: ~7:40 pm

Players are on a 75 minute dinner break.  The Clubhouse has been cleared and tournament staff is doing a chip inventory.

We'll get you chip leaders when play resumes.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Straight Quadruple

Level 8 (Blinds 400/800/100 ante)
1C Entries: 743 (1625 total)

McCarty Miracle

We hear a lot of commotion in the Clubhouse and when we get to the table we hear Eric McCarty say, "I have a straight," and in fact he does as he knocks out three players.

McCarty says he was the last to call three all-ins with Q♣ J♣ and is against TT, JJ & A♣ 8♣.

The board shows K-9-3-T-A and as the player with pocket Tens momentarily celebrates his set on the turn, it gives McCarty the straight.

All four players have between 10k and 15k with McCarty getting more than a quadruple-up.

"I figured I only have 15k, I either re-enter (if he lost) or quadruple-up," say McCarty who summarizes the hand on Twitter.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): AK Loving Parx and AA

Level 7 (Blinds 300/600/100 ante)
1C Entries: 659 (1,541 total)

Anna Khait (Brooklyn, NY) is an up and coming player we've seen playing up and down the East Coast.  This is her first time at Parx and says, "I love it here," and is spreading the love.

Anna, Pierre and Peter sharing their thoughts via Twitter.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Chippy McStacks

Level 7 (Blinds 300/600/100 ante)
1C Entries: 659 (1,541 total)

William Morel

The clear chip leader is William Morel (Richmond Hill, NY) who's at 240k (400 bb).

Morel is in the Poker Room, while the leader in the Clubhouse is Jesse Mercado (Brooklyn, NY) with 140k.  Mercado's run-good includes him taking down a pot on the river with pocket Aces against his opponents pocket 4s.

Players with more than 100k (167 bb) are well ahead of the pace.

Ping is the Green Chip Leader

Players are just back from a 15 minute color-up as the green (25) chips have been removed from play.

Stacks are starting to grow and less green makes it easier to find the chip leaders.

Anybody with more than 100k is in great shape and we'll track them down during this level.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Big Screens at Big Stax

Level 5 (Blinds 100/200/25 ante)
1C Entries: 561 (1,443 total)

Clubhouse

In addition to the 61 tables (tournaments & cash) in the Poker Room, the Clubhouse expands the number to 85 total tables during any Big Stax series.

And with 41 big screens in the Clubhouse alone, it's an awesome place to watch the game while
check-raising the turn with the nuts.

Currently on the screens:

St. John's vs Villanova (men's college hoops)
Notre Dame vs Virginia (men's college hoops)
Olympics
Golf
Soccer
Auto Racing

But even these selections isn't enough for WSOP bracelet holder Brian Lemke (Norristown, PA) who
has his laptop set up to watch men's college lacrosse over the internet.

"I wish this game was on for everyone to see," says Lemke, who has one eye on the cards and
one on the Maryland vs Syracuse. Lemke's stepson Niko Amato is Maryland's starting goaltender
and Lemke's grateful that he can watch the game.

The Terrapins (#7) are currently leading top ranked Syracuse 15-5. "They're playing great," says Lemke who is up to 42k.

Lemke couldn't travel to the Carrier Dome because of a prior family obligation, but staying home gives him a chance to play at Parx.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Parx Sets New Mark

Level 4 (Blinds 150/300/50 ante)
1C Entries: 493 (1,375 total)

Guerrero & Kovats

Just before the day's first break, players helped set a Parx tournament record with 1,375 entries.  The previous best was 1,364 in this series a year ago, February, 2013.

"We're appreciative of the turn out and things keeps getting bigger and better," says Bill Entenman, Parx Director of Poker Operations. "Not just now, but we're also excited about May."

Players can circle the early part of May on their calendars as tournament officials finalize the plans for the next Big Stax series.

Today Entenman, Tournament Director Dave Grubb and the entire Parx poker team have seamlessly gotten every player into the field with little or no wait time.

Not only do we see local players like Joe "Worm" Palma (Bensalem, PA), Brian Wright (Langhorne, via Bradley Beach, NJ) and Ray Ross (Maple Glen, PA) in the tournament, but players are coming from all over Pennsylvania and beyond.

A couple of first timers include Rosendo Guerrero (Hazelton, PA), who made the 1 hour, 40 minute trip to Parx. "This is awesome," he says about the structure and value. "I'm a new player and starting to travel (to play)."

Another Parx newbie is Tom Kovats (Fairfax, VA) who normally plays his poker in West Virginia but says, "they don't have tournaments this big," adding, "I had to check it out."

Registration for this event is open through Flight C and players can register until just before the start of Day 2, noon Sunday.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Sets: the Good, Bad & Ugly

Level 3 (Blinds 100/200/25 ante)
1C Entries: 436 (1,318 total)

After crossing the 1,300 entry mark, we hear several stories that involve sets.

Ray Taylor (Virginia Beach, VA) is quick to tell us about two hands were he flopped a set, and one that turned into quads. Taylor picks up chips on both hands and is up to 70k

Meanwhile a woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, laments how she flopped a set of fives and has her opponent in bad shape with AA. But an ugly Ace (for her) on the turn gives the player a better set and she's off to re-enter.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Packed House

Level 2 (Blinds 75/150)
1C Entries: 376 (1,258 total)

Not only is the Clubhouse packed to the gills with 24 full tables, but there are19 more are in the Poker Room.

All eyes are on the 1,364 entries for this event last year in Big Stax IV, which may be met before the day's first break.

Cries of "seat open" are quickly followed by "rebuy," which should be re-entry, but semantics aside we've got a lot of players at Parx Casino.

Big Stax 300 (Day 1C): Easy as A, B, C

Level 1 (Blinds 50/100)
1A & 1B Total Entries: 873

The third and final flight in the opening event of the Big Stax V series is underway.

Lots of familiar faces are in the Clubhouse which is sure to be an overflow day with some players setting up shop in the Poker Room.

For the third straight day players begin with 30k in chips and levels are 45 minutes long.  There's unlimited re-entries and registration is open until the first deal of Sunday's Day 2 noon start.

There's already more than $250,000 in the prize pool and with more than 900 total entries already, we'll expect to see a fairly easy run at last year's 1,364 total in this event at Big Stax IV.
